UEFA Champions League: Legia Warsaw 2-2 FC Steaua București

Hugollek

In the second leg of the fourth qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League Legia’s footballers drew 2-2 with FC Steaua’s players at their own stadium on Tuesday evening. Due to Legia’s 1-1 draw in Bucharest a week earlier, these are FC Steaua’s players, who qualified to the group phase of the tournament. The team from Romania won on away goals (3-3 in two-legged tie).
In the first half of the game Legia played really poorly. Within only two minutes Warsaw defenders let Romanian players strike two goals and Legia was losing 0-2 in the 9th minute (!). Goals’ authors were: Nicolae Stanciu and Federico Piovaccari. In the 21st minute of the match Warsaw club’s footballers managed to defeat their rivals’ goalkeeper but the referee didn’t recognise the goal. Few minutes later Miroslav Radović stroke the first goal for his team. Nevertheless, when the referee blew his whistle to finish the first half, Legia was still losing (1-2).
After the break Legia’s players were trying to fight but most of their attacks were either ineffective or blocked by their Romanian opponents. Eventually, in the last minute of the injury time Warsaw team equalised – Jakub Rzeźniczak defeated Ciprian Tătărușan. Unfortunately, moments later the referee finished the game with the result 2-2.
Although Legia didn’t lose the match, it was knocked out of the tournament because FC Steaua scored more away goals.

Because of UEFA’s decision on closing the northern stand of the Wojska Polskiego stadium, not everyone was able to see the match. However, Legia’s supporters presented a nice and colourful stands show and lit some pyrotechnics.
